Growing Up Together in May



 

Dear ELEVATED Community,


I’m your brother K, & today is a great day to have a great day! Ah, May! The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, & if you’re feeling that burst of energy to clean out your closet, it might just be those lingering instincts revealing this time of Exuberance! Do you feel it? This May, as we dive into a time of vibrance & overflow, let’s sprinkle a little 80’s & 90’s nostalgia into our steps. Think of it as a throwback theme to energize our communal & personal development efforts.


Embracing Growth with a Nostalgic Twist


Let’s channel our inner Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff because, it’s almost “Summer, summer, summertime” as we focus on radiating like the summer sun in the most retro ways possible. Exuberance is about being filled with energy & overflowing positivity. 


Initiatives and Highlights for May:

  1. Growing & Glowing : Get outside & in the sun daily! Especially if you’re melanated. Remember when getting your hands dirty meant something other than fixing the VCR tracking? Did you make any strides toward a community gardening initiative? In your own yard or a common area in your community, plant with purpose & perhaps a few sunflowers (the unofficial mascot of the '90s) will sprout for good measure. Dig out those old band T-shirts & let’s make gardening the new neo soul (or grunge if that’s your vibe) scene!

  2. Gatherings & Goodies: Did anyone else master the art of sharing by divvying up the last pack of Gushers? Or Now & Laters? Explore how those old-school lessons from family board game nights (sans the Monopoly-induced arguments) can teach us about resolving conflicts today. Remember sleep overs or just playing street football with your friends & how organized we were. We communicated better when phones had wires & were connected to the wall. We are much more energized & engaged in life when we have strong, positive vibes flowing through our network. In this real game of life, let’s roll the dice on peace & understanding, without flipping the board!

  3. Retreat Within: You are welcome to try wellness retreats or  a spa day at a ‘90s bed & breakfast—complete with all the Zen but none of the dial-up internet. Can work just as well to dust off those old yoga mats that have been hiding in the back of your closet since Y2K was a thing. Physical activity mixed done mindfully can improve your mood & physiological processes, both of which can boost your energy reserves. A few non dietary tips:


  • Channel your inner Mr. Rogers this month. Be present in your interactions as if you're asking your neighbor, "Won't you be my neighbor?" with every conversation.

  • Draw on your past winners. Whether it’s re-watching “Saved by the Bell” for some preppy fashion tips or breaking out your old Game Boy for a Tetris marathon, make it fun & nostalgic.

  • Take a page from Bob Ross & paint some happy little trees, or perhaps learn something new like those dance moves from MC Hammer that you never quite mastered. Share your experiences or host a retro movie night featuring classics like “The Breakfast Club” or “Back to the Future.” Use things that have filled you in the past mixed with that imagination & ingenuity you’ve been developing your whole adult life for your jobs. 


Reflecting on Our Journey


As we lace up our high-top sneakers & adjust our scrunchies, let’s take a walk down memory lane & see how far we’ve come since those heady days of Looney Tunes & Nick at Nite. May is not just a time to enjoy the beauty around us but to groove to the beat of our own developmental mixtape.

Tuning our nutrition, physicality & thought life to cultivate our energy level is key. Doing so cements this as a time of magnificent growth & harmonious living, as we strive to elevate our spirits & those of our community with a healthy dose of laughter & leg warmers. Here’s to a totally rad & energized month ahead!
